This week we will be MAP testing on Monday/Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will begin reading Simply Shakespeare, Macbeth! Even though some are grumbling now about reading Shakespeare, I feel sure they will love it by the end of Macbeth. If your child has not yet brought his/her book to school, please make sure they have it by Wednesday. Thank you!
Here is some exciting news! We are having Young Adult Writer Scott Reintgen @ CHMS May 1st!!!
Scott is based in Apex, NC. He went to Cary High School and came to Chapel Hill for his undergraduate degree, studying English and Creative Writing at UNC. He followed that by teaching at Jordan High School in Durham County and Holly Springs High School in Wake County. He is now a full time writer. His debut novel, Nyxia, released in September from Penguin Random House. It is the first in a trilogy. The second book, Unleashed comes out this summer. Nyxia has been very wellreceived. It hit the Indie Bestseller List in its first week and was chosen by the New York Public Library for their Best YA Books of 2017 list. It was also nominated for the LA Times Book Prize. His presentation is not only about his book but also passion and how passion guides him as an author. It's applicable to any student, and will encourage them to think about what they want to do with their lives. Students also hear from a professional author and get to see a glimpse into what it takes to make a dream like that come true. Students are able to buy his book and get it signed and personalized. We are sending home a preorder form that needs to be turned in with money by April 20. We will have some extra books for sale on the day of the presentation. Synopsis: A Detroit teen accepts an interstellar space contract only to realize the promised millions must be won in a brutal competition where winners face the ultimate choice – take money and become pawns in the corporation’s sinister plans or find a way to fight that won’t forever compromise their humanity.
If students would like a signed copy of Nyxia, the can be purchased for $15.50. See me for order forms. Checks should be made payable to Park Road Books. Thank you!

Beginning Monday, 3/5, if your child wants to come in early any day other than my regular tutoring day, Wednesday, he/she will need to email me in advance, so I can let someone in the front office know to let them into the building. Thank you so much!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
It's hard to believe March is almost here! The year is flying by!
Book Clubs are going well! The idea of our Book Talks that we have on Fridays is for the students to participate in an authentic discussion about their books to gain a deeper understanding of the novel. Students seem to really be enjoying this! They have remained engaged and on topic during the past two weeks. It would be helpful to discuss your child's book with him/her before Friday, posing questions and ideas that they can turn around and bring to their Book Talk.
The students are currently working on writing persuasive letters, encouraging their readers to want to go to the college/university they selected. These letters will count as a FORMAL grade and will be due on Tuesday, March 6th.
We will not have a new stems list this week, but will pick up with list 12 next week. The NRI assignment on thesis statements is due on Wednesday and there will be a quiz on Thursday.
Third quarter is off to a great start! We will begin Book Clubs next week. Please make sure to purchase your child's book as soon as possible, if you haven't done so already. It's very important that they have their books when we begin our clubs so they don't get behind on their reading. Books are no longer available on pay4schoolstuff, but they can be purchased at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
We started back with NoRedInk this week. Students have an assignment to complete by Friday and they will take a quiz on this week's skills (parallel structure and commas) on Friday, along with the stems list 9 quiz. A few stems from lists 7 and 8 will also be on this week's quiz.
Welcome back from what seemed to be our second winter break! I hope you all enjoyed the snow days!
Since we missed the last three days of the quarter, our calendar has been adjusted to extend second quarter by three days. Tomorrow will be a B day. The last day of second quarter is now January 24th, which means students also have a few extra days to turn in any late/missing work or test corrections. All work is due no later than Tuesday, January 23rd. Please encourage your child to check PS to see if anything is missing. Any formal assignment with a score lower than a 79 can be rewritten or test corrections can be made. A few points on a formal assignment makes a difference in the overall grade. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity. I remind them often, but I also let them know I will not track them down, as I want them to take responsibility for their work.
Students will receive copies of their second semester schedules in their homeroom classes on Thursday morning.
Below is information on the required reading book sale. This quarter, we are having nonfiction book clubs and the students chose which book they wanted to read. The titles are listed below. Please check with your child to see which book club he/she will be in. Also, if you decide to order through Amazon, please go to Amazon Smile, as CH will receive a small portion of the sale. We will begin our book clubs on February 7th, so please make sure your child has his/her book by then. Thank you so much!
Required Reading On Sale Through January 25
Online sales are now through January 25.
Lobby sales will be January 23-25.
Due to changes with our suppliers, we will no longer be able to pre-order books for sales. Online sales will be available through January 25. We will hold lobby sales January 23-25 taking orders for books. ALL sales (online and lobby) will end January 25. We will provide the number of each book ordered to our supplier. All books will be delivered to ELA teachers by February 7. If you have any questions, please contact amberschuchmann@gmail. com.

We are back into the swing of things! We started stems list 7 this week and will have a quiz on Friday. The quiz will include words from lists 5 & 6, as well.
Third quarter books will be going on sale soon. We are going to have nonfiction book clubs. Your child has a choice about the book he/she wants to read. The link below will take you a brief description of each of the titles. Students decided which book they want to read for the Book Club in class today. I have been posted daily homework in our Google Classroom, so please have your child check the "homework" link if they are absent (or left their agenda at school).
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and got to enjoy time with family and friends! Just three weeks to go before Winter Break, but we have a lot to do between now and then. We started Walk Two Moons today. If you have not purchased a copy for your child, please do as ASAP, as our goal is to finish this book before Winter Break, which means students will have a lot of reading outside of class to do. We will be walking to Ardrey Kell Friday morning to watch a performance of "Shipwrecked". Please return the blue permission slip that was sent home, if you haven't done so already.
The students did a wonderful job on their games! I am so proud of the effort they put into this project. Tuesday is going to be our "Game Day", we will have snacks and play games! If you are able to send in some snacks to share with the class, that would be wonderful and much appreciated! Thank you!
The due date for the short story has been moved to Tuesday, 11/28. Tomorrow in class, we will read and score student samples to determine which is an exemplary, proficient and emerging story. I will post these in our Google Classroom for the students to use as a reference as they work on their stories.
We finished The Moves today! I hope your students enjoyed this book. In lieu of a test on the novel, students will be completing an alternate assessment, making a board game based on the book, which will count as a FORMAL grade. Directions have been sent home and are also posted in our Google Classroom, along with additional resources they may find helpful as they make their game. The game is due this Friday, 11/17.
We will begin working on our second Embedded Assessment, writing a short story, tomorrow. Due to the time it took us to finish reading The Moves, we are getting a later start on writing these stories; therefore, the due date will also be pushed back. Tentatively, I'm hoping to have them ready for submission on Tuesday, 11/21. However, we will see how the writing process goes, we may need more time. In that case, they will be due the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, 11/28.
If you haven't purchased Walk Two Moons, our second quarter book, the lobby sale runs now through Thursday, 11/16. The cost is $9.00. We will begin reading this the week after Thanksgiving, so please make sure you purchase a copy. Thank you!
We will wrap up The Moves Make the Man this week, and second quarter books, Walk Two Moons, is available now through Thursday, 11/9 on www.pay4schoolstuff.com.
In lieu of a test, students will make a board game based on the book The Moves, which will count as a formal grade. Directions will go home on Thursday, 11/9 and the game will be due on Friday, 11/17.
We have been reading stories in class over the past two weeks. Next week, we will begin to work on our second Embedded Assessment, writing a short story. The short story will be due on Friday, 11/17.
We have begun working on NoRedInk, an online tool used for teaching grammar, usage, mechanics and style to students. Assignments will be given each Monday for the students to complete by Friday. A quiz will be given each Friday, based on the skill practiced for the week. Remind your students to work spend time each night working on this program.
The Moves test on chapters 1-19 will be on Wednesday, 10/25. Students should use the study guides we made in class, as well as look over their chapter responses to prepare for the test. This will be the final formal grade for the first quarter.
All test corrections and missing work is due on Thursday, 10/26. Please encourage your student to turn in any missing work, as a zero really impacts their overall average.
We are going to the Book Fair on Friday. Students should bring money, if they'd like to purchase books.
There is no school for students next Monday, 10/30, as it is a teacher workday. Enjoy the long weekend together :)
The students' first embedded assessment, a personal narrative, is due Tuesday, 10/17. A printed rough draft is due tomorrow, Monday, 10/16, which we will use for peer editing. This narrative will be a formal grade.
This week is Spirit Week! Pink-out t-shirts will be sold in the lobby each morning ($10). In addition, beads and paper chain links will be sold. Teams get points for each student who participates, as well as points for the "In it to win it" games on Friday.
